Cholesterol & Lipid Test Panels in Hawaii
Cholesterol & Lipid Test Panels is a laboratory test you can request directly. This blood test measures the fats, or lipids, in your blood, including different types of cholesterol and triglycerides.
What this test is
A lipid panel, also known as a cholesterol test, is a common blood test that provides information about your body's cholesterol and other fat levels. It helps assess your risk for developing conditions related to high cholesterol.
What it measures
- Total Cholesterol — the overall amount of cholesterol in your blood
- HDL Cholesterol — the 'good' cholesterol that helps remove other forms of cholesterol
- LDL Cholesterol — the 'bad' cholesterol that can build up in arteries
- Triglycerides — a type of fat in your blood that is used for energy
What the test involves
This test is performed on a blood sample, typically collected through a standard venipuncture (a needle inserted into a vein). The blood is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.
Why it is often ordered
Clinicians often order this test to evaluate your risk of heart disease and stroke. It can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of lifestyle changes or medications aimed at managing cholesterol levels.
Preparation
To ensure accurate results, you will likely need to fast for a specific period before the test, usually 9-12 hours. Always follow the precise instructions provided by the laboratory where your sample will be collected.
How results are reported
Your results will show the levels of various lipids in your blood. Laboratories provide reference ranges, which are ranges of expected values, but these can vary between different labs.
