Hepatitis Testing in Idaho

What this test is

Hepatitis tests are laboratory analyses used to detect the presence of viruses that cause inflammation of the liver, known as hepatitis. They can identify different types of hepatitis, such as Hepatitis A, B, and C, and help distinguish between acute (recent) and chronic (long-term) infections.

What it measures

• Hepatitis A Antibody (IgM) — indicates a recent Hepatitis A infection
• Hepatitis B Surface Antigen (HBsAg) — indicates an active Hepatitis B infection
• Hepatitis B Core Antibody (Total) — indicates past or current Hepatitis B infection
• Hepatitis B Surface Antibody (Anti-HBs) — indicates immunity to Hepatitis B
• Hepatitis C Antibody (Anti-HCV) — indicates past or current Hepatitis C infection

What the test involves

A sample is collected, typically through a standard blood draw from a vein in your arm. The collected sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Why it is often ordered

Clinicians often order hepatitis testing to screen for the virus in individuals at higher risk or to diagnose symptoms suggestive of liver inflammation. These tests can also be used to monitor the effectiveness of treatment for hepatitis infections.

Preparation

Follow any specific instructions provided by the laboratory where you will have your sample collected. Generally, no special preparation is needed for these tests.

How results are reported

Your test results will be reported to you, usually within a few business days. Qualitative reference ranges for these tests are determined by the specific laboratory performing the analysis.
