Mold Spores Allergy Test Panel: Tests 5 Common Types in Maryland

What this test is

This test identifies IgE antibodies, which are proteins your immune system makes in response to allergens. It checks for sensitivity to five specific mold species often found indoors and outdoors.

What it measures

• Alternaria tenuis IgE — reflects sensitivity to a common indoor and outdoor mold
• Aspergillus fumigatus IgE — reflects sensitivity to a mold found in soil and decaying matter
• Candida albicans IgE — reflects sensitivity to a yeast that can cause allergic reactions
• Cladosporium herbarum IgE — reflects sensitivity to a widespread mold found indoors and outdoors
• Mucor racemosus IgE — reflects sensitivity to a mold commonly found in dust and soil

What the test involves

A standard blood draw from a vein in your arm is required for this test. The collected blood sample is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Why it is often ordered

A clinician may order this test if you are experiencing symptoms that suggest an allergic reaction to mold. It can help pinpoint specific mold types that may be contributing to your symptoms.

Preparation

Follow any specific instructions provided by the laboratory where your blood will be drawn. Generally, no special preparation is needed for this test.

How results are reported

Results indicate the presence and level of IgE antibodies to each mold type tested. Reference ranges, which help interpret the results, are specific to each laboratory.
