Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) Online Testing in Puerto Rico

What this test is

The Comprehensive Metabolic Panel (CMP) is a common laboratory test that measures 14 different substances in your blood. It helps evaluate your body's chemical balance, metabolism, kidney function, and liver function.

What it measures

• Glucose — blood sugar level
• Calcium — mineral important for bones and body functions
• Electrolytes (Sodium, Potassium, Chloride, CO2) — body's fluid balance and acidity
• Kidney Function (BUN, Creatinine) — how well your kidneys are filtering waste
• Liver Function (ALT, AST, ALP, Bilirubin) — indicators of liver health and function
• Proteins (Albumin, Total Protein) — body's fluid balance and nutrient transport

What the test involves

This test requires a blood sample, which is typically collected by a trained professional through a standard venipuncture (a needle inserted into a vein). The blood is then sent to a laboratory for analysis.

Why it is often ordered

Clinicians often order a CMP to screen for or monitor various health conditions, such as diabetes, kidney disease, or liver problems. It can also be used to check electrolyte and fluid balance.

Preparation

To prepare for this test, you should follow the specific instructions provided by the laboratory where you will have your blood drawn. Some labs may require you to fast for a period before the test.

How results are reported

Your results will show the measured levels of each component in the panel. It is important to note that reference ranges, which indicate what is considered normal, can vary between laboratories.
