Lactose Tolerance Test in Puerto Rico
Below is a plain-language overview of the lactose tolerance test. This test helps identify if your body has difficulty digesting lactose, a sugar found in milk and dairy products.
What this test is
Lactose intolerance occurs when the body does not produce enough lactase, an enzyme needed to break down lactose. This test assesses how your body processes lactose after you consume a lactose-containing drink.
What it measures
- Hydrogen (Breath) — measures hydrogen gas in your breath after consuming lactose
- Glucose (Blood) — measures glucose levels in your blood after consuming lactose
What the test involves
This test typically involves drinking a liquid containing lactose and then having your breath or blood analyzed. A breath sample is collected at regular intervals after drinking the solution.
Why it is often ordered
A clinician may order this test if you experience digestive symptoms such as bloating, gas, or diarrhea after consuming dairy. It can help determine if lactose is the cause of your discomfort.
Preparation
You will need to follow specific instructions from the laboratory before your test. This often includes fasting for a period before the test.
How results are reported
Results are usually available within a few business days and will indicate whether your body digested lactose properly. Reference ranges, which help interpret your results, are determined by the specific laboratory performing the test.
